Fantastic talents and eccentric portraits with a great sense of humour made Giuseppe Arcimboldo world-famous. He is considered one of the most whimsical artists of the Renaissance. His unique composite portraits, in which he assembled well-known contemporaries using flowers, fruits, leaves, fish and books. Arcimboldo's surprising collage paintings exude wit and irony and were already extremely popular half a millennium ago.
Because of his imaginative depictions, Arcimboldo became one of the idols of the surrealists of the 20th century. Salvador Dalí, for example, interpreted some of the Renaissance master's motifs in his own works.
