Conrad Felixmüller's pictorial early-phase work is determined by strong influences of Expressionism, which he, in contrast to his colleagues, understands in a socially critical sense and soon transforms into an expressive realism with an individual character.
Felixmüller captured scenes of everyday life in the powerful lines of his drypoint etchings and woodcuts.
In the present work, he portrayed a woman during her morning routine, lost in thoughts while combing her hair. The sheet is numbered, signed by hand, and additionally monogrammed by the artist on the printing plate.
Original cold-needle etching on handmade paper, 1920. Edition: 30 copies on handmade paper, numbered and signed by hand. With the collection stamp "Slg. Carl Vogel Hamburg" on the back. Motif size/sheet size 48.5 x 34 cm. Size in frame 67.5 x 52 cm as shown.
About Conrad Felixmüller
Conrad Felixmüller (1897-1977) is one of the most important representatives of Expressionism and New Objectivity.
In 1919, he became a founding member and president of the Dresden Secession. During the National Socialist era, his works were declared as "degenerate" by the Nazi Party but today they are a permanent part of major museums all around the world.
The field of graphic arts, that includes artistic representations, which are reproduced by various printing techniques.
Printmaking techniques include woodcuts, copperplate engraving, etching, lithography, serigraphy.
Depiction of typical scenes from daily life in painting, whereby a distinction can be made between peasant, bourgeois and courtly genres.
