About Constance Renken
Constance Renken is a freelance artist who works in Hamburg, Germany. Her enthusiasm for painting had already developed at a young age. Her large-format, abstract motifs, where she uses acrylic paints with palette knives on canvases, are dominated by expressive colours, capturing the emotions of interpersonal encounters. The more extreme the colour contrasts, the more intense and genuine the feeling of the encounter.
"Sometimes you meet people in your life, apart from those you love, who fascinate and touch you in a special way. For me, this kind of encounter is permanently connected with intense thoughts that I need to process in my work," says Constance Renken. "The time I spend immersed in my art is a piece of freedom for me... far away from everyday life and all rules. I experience it as very valuable and fulfilling. Each work is a part of me and my personal story."
The motifs in her works often have an association with nature, evoked by the recurring horizon line in her works. This gives the viewer a point of orientation within the abstract play of colours, creating an imaginary vastness and a certain longing for freedom.
Constance Renken lived and worked in New York City for five years. Her works were presented there in various exhibitions, including in Chelsea, SoHo and on Long Island. To this day, she is fascinated by American Abstract Expressionism. Her art also focuses on feeling and spontaneity.
Term for paintings and sculptures that are detached from the representational depiction, which spread throughout the entire western and parts of the eastern world from around 1910 onwards in ever new stylistic variations. The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, born in 1866, is considered the founder of abstract art. Other important artists of abstract art are K.S. Malewitsch, Piet Mondrian, and others.
A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art that has been personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolours, drawing, etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there exist the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a type of modern art, that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
In the history of arts, the starting point of this trend was the work "Les Meules" (1890/1891) by Claude Monet, in which for the first time a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
