About Frank Suplie
Under the open sky of the landscape, Frank Suplie seeks to capture its essence in his paintings. Like all Northern German realists, the subject always takes precedence for him, he would never neglect any detail. He rarely uses grey or brown, and never dirty or dull colours; instead, soft pastel tones dominate his work, occasionally intensifying into pure red or yellow in certain areas. Frank Suplie's painting moves within this bright colour scale - which he masters with great skill.
Frank Suplie (born in 1950) - a graduate of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and master student of Professor Klaus Fußmann - found his subjects for a long time simply by looking out of the window of his studio in an old factory building.
He first tried plein air painting in 2005 after accepting an invitation with some scepticism, as Suplie works exclusively with the traditional egg tempera technique, where egg yolk diluted with water serves as a binder for the pigments. He succeeded. "I have disproven the historical claim that plein air painting is only possible since the invention of paint tubes," he reports with justified pride. Since then, Suplie has regularly participated in the gatherings of the "Northern German Realists," who have joined forces to preserve plein air painting. The result is masterfully composed landscape paintings that stand out for their painting technique and the warm pastel tones achieved through it.
Suplie's landscape impressions are represented in many public collections.
