Ganoine Scalefish (Lepidotus Elvensis)
Stone witnesses of prehistoric times: At the time of the first flowering plants, when life began to soar, organisms in the vast lagoons of the Jura Sea were transformed into minerals, into naturally created works of art and stone witnesses of former communities of life. The bony fish Lepidotus was widespread worldwide in the Mesozoic and reached lengths of almost 2 m. Its strikingly pearlescent surface is the result of a long process of evolution. Its striking pearly sheen originated from ganoine deposited on the strong scales during growth. The button-like teeth - called toadstones in medieval folklore - were probably used to crack shells. Jurassic/Lias, ca. 170 million years ago. Place of discovery: Holzmaden. Original: slate.
