About Georgia O'Keeffe

1887-1986

Georgia O'Keeffe was the most important pioneer of 20th century American painting. She became famous above all for her flower paintings in bright colours. Her work also included cityscapes and landscape views. She succeeded in combining the naturalness of pictorial objects and abstraction and thus paved the way for modern painting in the USA.

As early as 1946, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, dedicated a retrospective to her as the first woman. To this day, her work is in high demand, and there are regular exhibitions of Georgia O'Keeffe in renowned art houses around the world. Even as the 21st century begins, top prices are being paid for her paintings at auctions. In 2014, for example, Sotheby's auctioned one of her works for around 45 million US dollars - the highest proceeds ever achieved for a work of art by a woman.
