Detailed description

Sculpture "Eve on Apple", bronze version

Lenz's desire to create was driven by his Christian beliefs. One of his main areas of work was the decoration of sanctuaries, churches and chapels. Among these works are numerous highly realistic depictions of, for example, John the Baptist or the despairing, devastated Saint Peter. But Lenz (1922-2007) sometimes approached religious themes with his characteristic humour. For example, his "Eve on an Apple" recaptures an original motif that has long since become a stereotype in art history in a new variation. That is especially evident in the way the sculpture plays with the set pieces of the biblical tale in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

"Eve on Apple" as a bronze casting. Edition in bronze on a shell limestone base, patinated and polished. Cast by hand using the Lost-Wax-Process. Limited edition of 99 copies, numbered and signed. Size sculpture 23 x 38 x 17 cm (w/h/d), size pedestal 20 x 4 x 39 cm (w/h/d). Weight 13.85 kg. Exclusively at ars mundi.

About Johann Baptist Lenz

1922-2007

The sculptor Johann Baptist Lenz, from the Eifel region, made a name for himself throughout Germany primarily with his design of monuments, altar rooms in churches, sculptures and fountains for public places. In addition to such large-scale works, he also created smaller representational as well as abstract sculptures. Sometimes realistic, sometimes humorous, but always sensitive and with a fine gift of observation, he devoted himself to his fellow human beings, religious representations and motifs from the animal world. He was a narrator of everyday life, his wife Maria Lenz said about him.
