Hokusai (1760-1849) was one of the most important representatives of ukiyo-e, the Japanese colour woodblock printing. His pictures influenced artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Hokusai's series of paintings "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" (1830-36), with which he captured the landscapes around Japan's highest mountain, became world-famous. "The Great Wave off Kanagawa", a woodblock print from this cycle, is still the world's most famous Japanese work of art.
