About Peder Mork Mönsted

1859-1941

The Danish landscape painter Peder Mork Mönsted travelled through Europe and created an extensive oeuvre of varied nature impressions. In between, he repeatedly returned to his Scandinavian homeland and painted mostly deserted, pure river and forest landscapes. Mönsted was influenced by Impressionism. His work cannot be categorised as academic landscape painting of the time.

The Scandinavian genre experienced a renaissance at the end of the last century, which also led to Mönsted's rediscovery. He was shown in 1995 in the exhibition "Light of the North" in Frankfurt am Main and Stockholm, among others. His works are collected worldwide, with a preference for Anglo-Saxon countries with their great tradition of atmospheric landscape depictions.

Mönsted was a close observer of water surfaces, the reflections embedded in their surroundings. For this, he even went out by boat and painted from the water in order to have a completely unobstructed view.
