Foundation Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde
During their lifetime, Ada and Emil Nolde decreed that the legacy of the great German expressionist (1867 - 1956) should be transferred to a foundation and made accessible to the general public. Thus, in 1956, the "Foundation Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde" was established, dedicated to preserving the artist's legacy and sharing Nolde's name with the world. A ten-member board of trustees ensures the realisation of the foundation's purpose and manages its assets. This includes a house in Seebüll near the Danish border, which Nolde himself had designed and used as a residence and studio from 1937. Today, the house showcases paintings, watercolours, drawings, graphic art, and handicrafts from Nolde's extensive collection through constantly changing exhibitions. The foundation also includes an archive of letters, diaries, notes, photographs, and other personal documents. These around 25,000 objects provide a unique insight into the life and work of one of the most famous painters of the 20th century. Due to its expansive garden grounds, Nolde's house in Seebüll is also a popular destination in the North Frisian region.
