LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, Münster

Art and culture - not just for the region of Münster: The "LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur" (English: LWL Museum of Art and Culture) is among the top art institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its collection provides an overview of approximately 1,000 years of art history. The collection comprises approximately 350,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, prints and coins, as well as 135,000 books. Works by renowned artists from all major epochs are represented here, for example, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Otto Piene and Gerhard Richter. The regular exhibitions are always accompanied by a diverse cultural programme featuring artist talks, lectures, panel discussions, and concerts.

The history of the "LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur" begins in the 19th century with the founding of the "Westphalian Art Association" in 1831 and the "Westphalian Association for Patriotic History and Antique Research" in 1825. In 1908, both associations found their first official residence for collaborative museum work at the Domplatz in Münster. In September 2014, a large extension was opened. Together with the main building, the museum now boasts an exhibition space of 7,500 square metres. The Kunsthaus is funded by the association Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL).

The originals of the artworks shown here are on display at the LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur.
