Replica "Duck Weight of Susa", cast
The idea of creating weights in the form of animals can be traced back to around 3500 BC when the first accounting systems emerged, eventually leading to the invention of writing in the Near East. Among the Babylonians and the Elamites, stone weights in the shape of ducks were commonly used.
Original: Black limestone, found in Susa, Old Elamite period, around 2000 BC, Musée du Louvre (SB 9330), Paris.
