In addition to his Art Nouveau-like nude objects or neoclassical goddesses, Roman Strobl the Elder devotes himself to mythology and legends for this sculpture: One evening, as he was telling his daughter Lea a bedtime story, a little gnome suddenly jumped onto the bedspread, introduced himself as the "ferocious gnome Gobi" and has been recounting his countless adventures ever since. It was born in a desert named after it and is a fellow who interferes everywhere and stands up for the weak. The little hero, who never shies away from an atrocity in its adventures if it is for a good cause, enjoys as a desert dweller the value of a particularly precious resource: water. And so he watches over the flowing water and summons the water spirits to keep it flowing...
