Sculpture "The Imperial Falcon", cast

Symbol of a dramatic period of Roman-German emperorship. The sight of it fascinated Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. Despite its folded back wings, the falcon radiates anything but tranquillity. It is said that the emperor had himself depicted in the image of the hunter, in keeping with his nature. Original: MMA, New York. German or Norman, c. 1320.
