Detailed description

Sculpture "Venus de Milo - Green" (reduction, height 32 cm), artificial marble

The Venus de Milo - from Classical Art to Pop Art.

The Venus de Milo is an icon of antiquity. In 1820, Frenchmen on the Cycladic island of Milos discovered the masterpiece of Greek sculpture. That is how it found its way to the Louvre, where it still can be found today. It is also an icon of modern art. Many painters and sculptors have taken up the ancient depiction of the goddess of love born from foam: For example, Max Ernst, who cited her in a graphic work as proof of the beauty of mathematics, or Salvador Dalí, who even added drawers to her in a surrealistic way. None of this detracted from her supernatural appearance - and so, even as a miniature in bright Pop Art colours, she appears equally impressive as the marble original in the Louvre, which is over two metres tall.
Original: Musée du Louvre, Paris. Hellenistic, 2nd century B.C. Marble.
