Atmospheric landscapes, charming societies, sensitive portraits - the works of Impressionism impress with their colours and their virtuoso adaptation of light conditions. "The painters of Impressionism no longer wanted to paint realistically. They wanted to capture the light and the atmosphere." (NDR, 27.6.2014)

Max Liebermann, for example, turned the play of light and shadow (the "Sun Spots") into one of his characteristic stylistic features. The Danish painter Peder Severin Krøyer even travelled regularly in summer to the small fishing village of Skagen for the perfect light. Here he found new inspiration in an artists' colony, not least because of the unique atmosphere on Denmark's northernmost coast. He was able to capture the light conditions in some of his greatest works, such as in "Summer Evening at Skagen - A Walk on the Beach".
