Detailed description
Icon "Madonna Glikofilussa", framed
The icons of the Orthodox Church are not simply "images", the consecrated objects enable, according to Orthodox belief, a connection between this world and the hereafter, between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Quite a few are even attributed miraculous powers. They obey a strict canon of images, which the creative, often anonymous saint-writer ("hagiographer") varies only very cautiously. The great sacral significance of the icon corresponds to its design: the artist usually decorates them elaborately with gold leaf.
A special printing process is necessary for the convincing reproduction of such a masterpiece. Only in this way is it possible to authentically transfer the intensity of the colours onto the picture canvas. The background of the picture (the "divine light") is achieved by a shiny metal alloy. On the back of the reproduction is a certificate explaining the motif and reproduction technique of the icon.
This icon subject, called Madonna Glikofilussa (Greek: Glykophilusa), shows the Mother of God as the tender, translated as "caressing" mother of the little Jesus child. The nimbus (halo) of both figures is refined with crystals. Size 35 x 43 cm.
