Ernst Barlach Society
Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) is one of the most important German artists of the 20th century. He became well-known primarily for his sensitive sculptures in bronze and wood. Lithographs, drawings, and literature were also part of his oeuvre. In order to preserve his legacy, the Ernst Barlach Society was founded in Hamburg in 1946. It is dedicated to Barlach's artistic work and researches his life and work. In addition, the Ernst Barlach Society is active in various fields of art and society. It is the sponsor of the Ernst Barlach Museums in Wedel and Ratzeburg. At these locations, as well as domestically and internationally, it organises exhibitions on Barlach, as well as on the art of Classical Modernism, Expressionism, and contemporary art. A significant focus of the society's work lies in promoting intercultural dialogue. Through various international collaborations, it engages in European-Islamic dialogue, including exhibitions and projects in Iran, Turkey, and Arab countries. Additionally, the Ernst Barlach Society supports young artists and has been awarding the Ernst Barlach Prize for Art regularly since 1990.
