LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur Münster
A journey through around a thousand years of European art and cultural history awaits visitors to the LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster, Germany. It ranks among the largest art institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia and houses a collection of around 450,000 objects. Its holdings include exhibits from the Middle Ages to contemporary art. Artists from all important epochs are represented in the collection, including Lucas Cranach the Elder, Franz Marc, Otto Piene and Gerhard Richter. The museum is operated by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL). The roots of the art museum trace back to the year 1908, when it was founded - at that time still under the name "Landesmuseum für die Provinz Westfalen". In 2014, the new building was opened, expanding its exhibition space to around 7,500 square meters in combination with the old building. In cooperation with the LWL Museum, various ars mundi editions were created, including works by August Macke and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
