The circus, the cow, the horse, the rooster, the man playing the violin - there is a whole arsenal of recurring pictorial motifs in Chagall's work that have long been the subject of comprehensive art historical analyses and more or less successful attempts at interpretation. Except for the flowers. They are omnipresent and occupied the artist throughout his life as a pictorial element, and repeatedly as a motif for individual works. A particularly beautiful example are his flowers against a red background, which he created in 1970 - at the age of 83 when he was to live and create art for another decade and a half.
