The Kunsthalle Bremen is one of the most significant institutions of visual arts in northern Germany. The historic exhibition house opened in 1849 in the heart of Bremen. The collection of the Kunsthalle Bremen includes artworks spanning around seven centuries, from the Renaissance to Impressionism, Classical Modernism, and contemporary art. Works by Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach can be found in the collection, as well as works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Max Liebermann, and media art by Nam June Paik and ZERO works by Otto Piene. In addition to sculptures and paintings, the Kunsthalle houses a remarkable copperplate cabinet with around 200,000 exhibits. A specialised art library with 95,000 books is also part of the museum. The Kunstverein Bremen, founded in 1823, serves as the sponsor of the Kunsthalle, making it one of the oldest private art institutions in Germany. Beyond its ever-changing exhibitions, the Kunsthalle also considers itself a place for encounters and cultural exchange. Comprehensive art education, as well as the awarding of the "Böttcherstraße Art Prize in Bremen" complete the profile of the Kunsthalle Bremen as a committed actor in the art world and society.
