Can art make a difference? It can, and its proof is the German Loriot. His extensive and varied work as an author, draughtsman and cartoonist, filmmaker and actor and opera director ensured that humour as an important component of art finally became respectable in Germany too.

Therefore, Bernhard-Viktor von Bülow, alias Loriot, enjoyed the reputation, even among far younger humourists, of being the great, unsurpassable master of their guild, to whom they owe much, if not everything. Loriot was, in other words, not simply a cartoonist or film and stage star, he was above all, one of the greatest (and most effective) artists of his time, whose work will endure into the future.
