The Colours of Summer

Even if a lot of people would say that the flower-filled spring is considered the most colourful season: summer is almost on a par with it in terms of colour appeal and has always fascinated artists. It was the scorching heat of southern France with its sun-dried meadows that broadened Vincent van Gogh's palette: ochre and yellow, play an important part in his late work, even though other artists of his time rarely used them. And the summery "blue hour" was never captured more beautifully than in "Café at Night".

Every season has its colour mood, and it is exactly this that allows a picture to be situated at a certain time. Koller's "Summer Bouquet" perfectly demonstrates this. Kroyer's "Summer Evening" would also be easy to decipher as a summer genre without the title given by the artist.

It is, therefore, understandable that the theme of the "Four Seasons" virtually imposes itself on an artist.

Even in the very symbolically executed cycle of the Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha, it cannot be ignored that the personified "seasons" achieve their effect primarily through a considered choice of colours.

What applies to art equally applies to jewellery designers. Michal Golan's "Indian Summer" is a true reflection of the American late summer in terms of colour.
