Fast-Paced Art: Car Pictures in Painting and Graphic Art
They are considered the Germans' favourite child: cars. Ever since cars have existed, their significance has extended well beyond that of being just a vehicle of transport. Instead, they rather function as status symbols, objects of longing and symbols of mobility and individuality. Many cars have become icons of their time and have made history with their design. With such an important cultural asset, it is not surprising that art has also taken up this motif. Many painters of the 20th and 21st centuries include car pictures in their portfolios. For example, world-famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Mel Ramos, Robert Longo, and Gerhard Richter have made the car and its role in society the subject of their works. Pictures of cars are also in great demand among the public. They are popular decorative objects and suitable for various spaces. You can buy many different car pictures at ars mundi.
Pictures of Cars in the 20th and 21st Century
The "birth" of the passenger car is generally considered to be the submission of the patent for a "three-wheeled vehicle with gas engine operation" by Carl Benz in 1886. Only a few years later, artists began to deal with the modern means of transport and increasingly painted car pictures. Among the early artists who dealt with automobiles were Man Ray, George Grosz, and Max Ernst. At the beginning of the 20th century, the main focus of pictures of cars was the fascination exuded by the new technology. Cars were seen as a symbol of progress, and the car pictures celebrated them as marvels of technology. Later, however, artists began to take a look at the downside of mobility and created quite critical works. Particularly noteworthy here are the car pictures of Pop Art, which addressed the function of cars as status symbols and consumer objects. The so-called "Art Cars" by BMW and Porsche became legendary. Here, the manufacturers made their models available as canvases. Numerous world-famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Frank Stella, and Keith Haring designed the paintwork of luxury cars for these projects, creating car pictures in a completely new interpretation.
