These epochs represent magnificent buildings and works of art in masterly execution. Even after many centuries, the paintings and sculptures of that period fascinate with their realistic and detailed depiction of the motifs and the skilful play with perspective, light and shadow.

After the Middle Ages, the visual arts restructured in terms of subject matter and design. In a return to antiquity, the focus shifted to secular themes, above all human beings. Artists now painted lively everyday scenes, expressive portraits and atmospheric landscapes or created filigree statues. In addition, mythology established itself as a theme in the Baroque period, and the scenes became increasingly opulent and dramatic. Both epochs produced a multitude of icons of art history, for example, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffael, Dürer, Botticelli, da Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
