About Antje Wichtrey

She has made human rights visible. For this, the German artist Antje Wichtrey has been awarded the German award "Golden Dove". The artist made woodcuts of the 30 human rights to draw attention to the importance of human rights. She thus joins the ranks of award winners such as Vaclav Havel, Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dalai Lama.

The artist was born in 1966 and grew up in Munich. She studied painting and printmaking in Hildesheim. Since 1989, she has had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. She created her first woodcuts during her first study visits to Andalusia.

Her works are characterised by reduced forms and graphic stylisation, but above all, a painterly quality and precisely chosen colour differentiation. Each print has a unique character. The technique that was developed in the Middle Ages for reproduction is her speciality and strength. The experimental layering of transparent and saturated colour areas, self-applied pigment mixtures and each colour handprint give each sheet a high degree of liveliness and originality.

Today she lives in Granada and is engaged as an illustrator of works of world literature.
