About Ariane Kipp
Ariane Kipp deals with the artistic upcycling of urban fragments of human existence.
In her new series "Stadtgeflüster", which was created in the artist's Berlin studio in 2023, Kipp processes posters and other two-dimensional found objects made of paper into polychrome sculptures and wall works. The artist procures the material for the objects in the neighborhoods of the metropolis of Berlin.
She explores the surroundings and searches for traces of written evidence of contemporary society. The posters and scraps of paper found in public spaces are first sorted in the artistic process. The artist then uses the found material to create assemblages in various forms that have a special lightness and richness of color.
Ariane Kipp's sculptures are formally reminiscent of works from the 1960s by the American artist John Chamberlain (1927-2011), who folded objects from pressed car scrap.
For the viewer, Kipp's objects take on a completely different meaning. They reveal fonts, slogans and logos in various shapes, sizes and colors, whose fragmented state no longer allows an understanding of the original information on the posters. The viewers themselves go in search of clues in the jungle of winding written set pieces. The sculptures function like archaeological finds that tell of our society. Their shards of letters document our current urban environment in an artistic way. The two-dimensional poster fragments become three-dimensional sculptures with a social message. By transforming the posters into objects, the artist preserves the everyday material.

A plastic work of sculptural art made of wood, stone, ivory, bronze or other metals.
While sculptures made of wood, ivory, or stone are carved directly from the material block, in bronze casting, a working model is prepared at first. Usually, it is made of clay or other easily mouldable materials.
The prime time of sculpture after the Greek and Roman antiquity was the Renaissance. Impressionism gave a new impulse to the sculptural arts. Contemporary artists such as Jorg Immendorf, Andora, and Markus Lupertz also enriched sculptures with outstanding works.
A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolour, drawing, lost-wax sculpture etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there are also the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a genre of modern art that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions, and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
The historical starting point is considered to be Claude Monet's "Les Meules" (1890/1891), where, for the first time, a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
