Bernd Altenstein

Bernd Altenstein has been a constant figure in German sculptural art for many decades. The starting point of his works in bronze and stone is always the human being.

Altenstein creates small everyday, and sometimes even surreal, situations around them. In doing so, he makes use of the entire range of figurative forms of expression, from realistic to stylised and even abstracting. Although the sculptural appearance is at the forefront for him, Altenstein always sees his works as a commentary on the current state of society. With his sculptures, he aims to offer surfaces for reflection and to stimulate thought processes.

Bernd Altenstein, born in 1943, can look back on an impressive exhibition history. He has shown his works in Germany, France and Japan, among other places. In addition, his sculptures can be found in public spaces in numerous German cities such as Dortmund, Hanover, Augsburg and Bremen. Alongside his sculptural work, he also taught for over 35 years as a professor at the University of the Arts Bremen. Bernd Altenstein lives and works in Worpswede.
