Arne Jacobsen

1902-1971

The Dane Arne Emil Jacobsen is considered one of the most important international designers and architects of the 20th century. At the age of 23, he won the silver medal at the Paris World Fair in 1925 for one of his first chair design. Jacobsen, who was committed to purism, preferred to design his buildings all by himself. From 1956 to 1961, the Hotel Royal of the Danish airline SAS was built, which Jacobsen planned as an architect and furnished as a designer. The hotel was Jacobsen’s last major project. Director Stanley Kubrick used Jacobsen's AJ flatware design, with right and left-handed spoons in his classic movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jacobsen's designs can be assigned to functionalism and are classical works of art, which are displays of splendour in modern living spaces.
