Wolfgang Kessler
Wolfgang Kessler (born in Hanover in 1962) studied fine art at the Braunschweig University of Art from 1982 to 1987. In 1988, he became a master student under Prof. Ben Willikens.
Light, colour, materiality. These are perhaps the most important components of Wolfgang Kessler's painting. Added to this is the calmness and introversion of the figures, most of whom are depicted alone against a black background.
This is unusual in contemporary painting, and at the same time it ties in with remembered images and an idea of beauty that are buried in our cultural memory. When the question arises as to whether painting is or should be beautiful, we tend to look far back in art history and end up with Delacroix, whose painting began to take an interest in things beyond the conventional idea of beauty.
Wolfgang Kessler lives and works in Detmold and Lemgo.
