Richard Lindner

1901-1978

Richard Lindner was born in Hamburg, Germany and grew up in Nuremberg. He emigrated to Paris in 1933 and eight years later to New York. He only began to paint shortly before his 50th birthday.

After only a short period of time, his work made it to the Mecca of art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His painting anticipated Pop Art. He was already painting figuratively when abstraction was in vogue. With the beginning of the Pop Art era, his shrill big-city icons gained worldwide attention.
