Herta Müller

Herta Müller was born in Bottrop, Germany, in 1955.

From 1975 to 1981, she studied art at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. She works in Berlin and Loro Ciuffenna, Italy, as a freelance artist in the field of painting and drawing. She finds her source of inspiration in the landscape of Tuscany with its streams and rivers, which she captures photographically and in drawings and translates into paintings in her Berlin studio.

"The reflection of water is a projection surface for different perspectives. On the one hand, it alienates the representations of nature, literally manipulating our perception through colour and light. On the other hand, it offers a contemplative effect. At best, it projects our own relationship to the world," the artist sums up.

Since 1990, Müller has been teaching as a visiting professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
