Bauhaus Walter Gropius "Atrium Automatik" wristwatch – Made in Germany – Sapphire crystal – 40mm
Walter Gropius’s first AUTOMATIK watch was awarded the Good Design Award – the world’s oldest design prize – even before its official launch. The ‘Atrium’ offers an insight into Bauhaus architecture in two ways. Through the watch’s glass back, one looks through a metal structure directly into the heart of the watch: the automatic movement. The design is modelled on the window mullions at the Bauhaus in Dessau and highlights Walter Gropius’s light-filled glass and steel architecture. The famous window façade is echoed once again on the black dial. The coloured windows give the viewer the impression of standing in the atrium itself. They are also modelled on the mystical play of light filtering through the glass windows in the chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp. Using this example of industrial and sacred architecture, WALTER GROPIUS symbolises the necessary coexistence of rationality and function, as well as subjective sensations and emotions, within an industrial product.
