Bauhaus Walter Gropius
Bauhaus Walter Gropius watches embody the principles of the Bauhaus like no other brand. Their design draws inspiration from the architecture of the Bauhaus in Dessau, as well as the works of prominent Bauhaus students and lecturers. The maxim ‘Form Follows Function’ is expanded here through playful reinterpretations into ‘Form Follows Fantasy and Fiction’, inviting the wearer to experience and shape time more consciously.
Made in Germany
The Walter Gropius brand embodies the fusion of Bauhaus aesthetics, technical precision and responsible manufacturing. Our watches embody the essence of the Bauhaus style: clarity, functionality and timeless elegance. For us, manufacturing our watches at our own factory in Germany is not just a matter of course, but a conscious decision. Why? Because quality, craftsmanship and the values of the Bauhaus are more deeply rooted here than in any other country.
New Bauhaus – Dessau 1925
This exclusive collection, which draws on the colours and forms of Lyonel Feininger’s paintings, reflects the creative and innovative philosophy of the Bauhaus. Feininger, a German-American painter, graphic artist and Bauhaus master, played a decisive role in shaping the visual language of the Bauhaus through his works. In a letter to his wife Julia dated 1925, Feininger wrote: “We’ve had enough of Weimar, gentlemen; we’re off to Dessau now,” when the Bauhaus was forced to relocate from Weimar to Dessau under political pressure. This quote symbolises the resilience and progress of the Bauhaus movement. The watches in the collection are characterised by their clean lines, geometric shapes and a colour palette directly inspired by Feininger’s paintings. These design elements uniquely combine functionality and beauty, offering both collectors and design enthusiasts a piece of history and art for the wrist.
Walter Gropius
Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus, a seminal school of art and design that existed in Germany from 1919 to 1933. Although he is best known as an architect and designer, he did not design any watches.
His design philosophy, however, has influenced numerous subsequent designers. Bauhaus-style watches are now regarded as timeless classics and are highly sought after. The principles of simplicity, functionality and clarity championed by Gropius and his Bauhaus colleagues have had a decisive influence on modern watch design.
It is important to emphasise, however, that the Bauhaus itself did not develop any watches. Timepieces that interpret the Bauhaus style merely draw on the elements that characterised its design and translate them into the present day.
Watch Collection
Watches designed in the spirit of the Bauhaus embody its essence through their clean design and high functionality. These timepieces are more than mere everyday objects; they are stylish accessories that carry on the legacy of Gropius and his philosophy. They combine aesthetics and functionality in a way that appeals to both lovers of the classic Bauhaus style and modern watch enthusiasts.
The design of the watches does not merely imitate Gropius’s design style, but reinterprets it. The Bauhaus is generally synonymous with timeless design, simplicity and, above all, experimentation. The design of the Bauhaus Walter Gropius watches brings to life the curious and playful aspect of the Bauhaus. Vibrant colours, based on the primary colours of blue, yellow and red, coloured hands and graphic dials are characteristic of the watch collection.
