Nativity figures "Three shepherds (without animals)", wood hand-painted
The Val Gardena has been a centre of wood sculpture for over 250 years. In the middle of the 19th century, the first wood sculptors from Val Gardena found their way to art academies. To this day, traditional arts and crafts skills are combined with academic training. This is also the case with Ulrich Perathoner, who comes from a family with a long tradition of wood sculpture and has perfected his art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, among other places.
His realisation of the "Ulrich Shepherd Nativity" bears witness to his mastery. It remains in the traditional peasant style and shows unique craftsmanship: Perathoner forms filigree, expressive figurines from sycamore maple wood that has been air-dried for years. Moreover, he paints them by hand up to the smallest detail. Each figurine is a unique piece.
This object is part of the following sets
A plastic work of sculptural art made of wood, stone, ivory, bronze or other metals.
While sculptures from wood, ivory or stone are made directly from the block of material, in bronze casting a working model is prepared at first. Usually, it is made of clay or other easily mouldable materials.
The prime time of sculpture after the Greek and Roman antiquity was the Renaissance. Impressionism gave a new impulse to the sculptural arts. Contemporary artists such as Jorg Immendorf, Andora, and Markus Lupertz also enriched sculptures with outstanding works.
