Detailed description
Picture "Rhapsody", framed
In post-Homeric Greece, the "Rhapsode" used to recite fragments of epic poems at festivals and banquets. Assembled into a whole, he would deliver them from memory in an elevated speaking tone. The fragmentary and improvisational nature of these poems remain characteristic features of musical rhapsodies, which have appeared in modern music since the 18th century.
Etching on handmade paper. Limited edition of 150 copies, numbered and signed. Sheet size 78 x 58 cm (h/w). Framed in a silver-coloured solid wood frame with passe-partout, glazed. Size 85 x 65 cm (h/w).

About Nissan Engel
1931-2016
Nissan Engel was a poet among painters. His colours are synonymous with poetry and music, endowed with visual power to move our emotions. His creative urge was elemental. He was a man possessed when a new work was coming together. He was able to visualise poetry and lyricism to such perfection in colour and form.
Nissan Engel was born in 1931 in Haifa, in what is now Israel. After a long stay in New York, he lived and worked in Paris. The artist passed away on 5 November 2016.
The diversity of cultures and experiences from more than 40 years of artistic creation distinguished him as one of the most important international artists. His exhibitions all over the world made him famous and popular.
With his great colour symphonies, he set another milestone on his way to the very top. "Beethoven's symphonies inspired me to create new large-scale compositions that translate the lyrical character of the music into colour and signs. I wanted to paint music. I wanted to create paintings in which the elements develop their own rhythm, form their own flowing harmony."
"Nissan Engel's paintings are more than just visual interpretations of music. They are the results of a study that is as intelligent as it is sensitive." (Daniel Barenboim).
Term for paintings and sculptures that are detached from representational depiction, which spread across the entire western world and parts of the eastern world from around 1910 onwards in ever new stylistic variations. The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, born in 1866, is considered the founder of abstract art. Other important artists of abstract art are K.S. Malewitsch, Piet Mondrian, and others.
