About Richard Diebenkorn
1922-1993
Richard Diebenkorn was an important American painter of the 20th century who became known above all for his fusion of abstraction and figuration.
Born in 1922 in Portland, Oregon, he developed his style in several phases. In the 1950s, he was part of the abstract expressionist movement, later shifting to a calmer, light-flooded style of painting. He became particularly famous for his "Ocean Park" series, in which he combined geometric shapes and soft colour tones to create complex, meditative compositions.
Diebenkorn died in 1993, but his works continue to have a significant influence on modern painting to this day.
Term for paintings and sculptures that are detached from representational depiction, which spread across the entire western world and parts of the eastern world from around 1910 onwards in ever new stylistic variations. The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, born in 1866, is considered the founder of abstract art. Other important artists of abstract art are K.S. Malewitsch, Piet Mondrian, and others.
