Detailed description
Picture "Untitled (Rippling Water)" (2016)
"Untitled (Rippling Water)" demonstrates Robert Longo’s characteristic mastery of condensing movement, light, and texture into a single, concentrated moment. Known since the 1980s for his monumental, photorealistic works, Longo captures in this sheet a seemingly fleeting natural phenomenon: the gentle yet powerful motion of water. The interplay of light reflections and depth is rendered in fine gradations, producing an almost meditative effect.
As in much of his work, Longo’s intense engagement with surface serves not only aesthetic purposes but also opens a space of tension between stillness and movement, transience and permanence. This piece guides viewers to the edge of reality while simultaneously moving into abstraction - the water becomes an autonomous pictorial space where form and meaning are in constant flux.
Carbon print, 2016. Edition: 30 copies on paper, numbered, signed and dated. Motif size/sheet size 71.1 x 55.8 cm. Size in frame 77 x 62 cm as shown.
