About Tobias Spierenburg
Tobias Spierenburg (born in 1977 in Haarlem, Netherlands) comes from a family with a long tradition of painting, which has been active in Haarlem for generations. After studying graphic arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he lived in Belgium for twelve years before moving to France. Today he lives and works in Reims.
Spierenburg's paintings consistently focus on one subject: trees. In numerous paintings built up in fine layers of oil, he unfolds the entire spectrum of this motif - between quiet intimacy and impressive presence. He pays particular attention to the light, which repeatedly bathes the tree in new moods and invites the viewer to look at it with the same intensity as the painter himself.
His works have been presented at numerous fairs and in solo and group exhibitions in Holland, Belgium, France, England and Hong Kong, including LINEART in Ghent, the Affordable Art Fair in London and Hong Kong, and the Salon des Antiquaires in Paris. He is permanently represented by renowned galleries in Antwerp, Paris and Brussels.
Spierenburg's painting combines contemplative austerity with a subtle, almost meditative colourfulness. Viewers of his paintings enter a quiet counterworld to the hustle and bustle of urban modernity - a place where light itself becomes the main character. Those who acquire a work by Tobias Spierenburg are not only investing in an atmospheric image motif. His paintings are enjoying growing popularity, particularly in the German art market, and are considered a stable investment and a sensual enrichment to any collection.
A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolour, drawing, lost-wax sculpture etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there are also the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a genre of modern art that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions, and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
The historical starting point is considered to be Claude Monet's "Les Meules" (1890/1891), where, for the first time, a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
