About Vista Alegre
Founded in 1824, Founder: José Ferreira Pinto Basto (Portugal)
Porcelain tableware, decorative items such as vases, crystal glasses and, more recently textiles, lamps and stainless steel cutlery - the traditional Portuguese company Vista Alegre stands for luxury tableware products of the highest quality and award-winning design. This is because the brand combines its historical heritage with contemporary values.
José Ferreira Pinto Basto established Portugal's first industrial porcelain factory near the city of Ílhavo, laying the foundation for Vista Alegre. Over time, the brand became one of Europe's leading manufacturers, with its prestigious porcelain products gracing the tables of royal households and the White House. Vista Alegre's creations are also exhibited in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York due to their exceptional quality and artistic design. In addition to modern production techniques, Vista Alegre employs several porcelain painters who decorate the porcelain by hand.
With the opening of the "Vista Alegre Art and Development Centre" in 1985, the brand once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation. The brand continues to release new collections that feature modern, noble designs and objects on the pulse of time, which, at the same time, quote the traditional heritage of the brand. The list of internationally acclaimed designers who collaborate with Vista Alegre every year is long - including celebrities such as Marcel Wanders, Karim Rashid, Christian Lacroix and Jaime Hayon.
Ceramic product made of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar.
Porcelain is formed by turning or pressing, and figurative objects are cast. Complex objects have to be cast in separated steps and sections, and then "assembled". After the moulding, the pieces are dried and undergo an initial firing at about 900°C. Next, the glaze will be applied and fired at temperatures between 1,240 °C and 1,445 °C. In renowned manufactories, the porcelain is painted by hand, with each colour being fired individually under strict temperature tolerances.
Porcelain was invented in China and became widespread in Europe from the 16th century onwards. The first European porcelain factory was founded in Meissen, Germany in 1710.
Other famous European porcelain factories include Fürstenberg, Höchst, Schwarzburger Werkstätten, Lladró, Nymphenburg, KPM, Augarten, Sèvres, Limoges, Royal Copenhagen, Worcester. Each factories label their products with their personal porcelain stamps to indicate their origin.
