The Horse in Art
Horse Paintings – From Antiquity to Modern Times
Horses symbolise adventure, strength and the untamed desire for freedom. Artists have always chosen horses as a motif to express inner longings. At the same time, these animals are known for their beauty and elegance, making them a pleasing subject from an aesthetic point of view.
Last but not least, these proud four-legged animals have always served as riding and working animals. Many horse paintings bear witness to the special bond between humans and animals – from ancient equestrian sculptures to romantic paintings to modern interpretations focusing on pride, wildness, and adventure.

Given the variety of classical and abstract horse art, a few tips and ideas for optimal presentation prove helpful – to make horse paintings and sculptures stand out particularly well.
- Depictions in natural tones harmonise perfectly with a warm interior.
- Bold colours provide exciting accents in modern minimalist styles.
- Bronze sculptures should ideally be presented as a central highlight – for example, on a separate pedestal or with additional lighting.
- Sculptures made of porcelain/ceramic are perfect for display cabinets but also work well on shelves or side tables.
